Place du Général de Gaulle - 62300 LENS

Recognized as one of the most emblematic buildings of the Art Deco movement

Opened in 1927, this building architect Urbain Cassan, whose shape is reminiscent of a locomotive, shows the influence of Art Deco on the reconstruction of the city after the First World War.

Just like the rest of Lens, the train station was completely destroyed during WWI. It was rebuilt in 1926 by the architect Urbain Cassan, one of Le Corbusier’s students. The station, recognized as one of the most symbolic buildings of the Art Deco architectural movement, brings to mind the shape of a locomotive. Inside the station are mosaics which show the faith in progress and pays tribute to miners and industry.
