The Ring of Memory

Inaugurated on November 11, 2014, the Ring of Memory was established at the top of the plateau of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, opposite the French National Necropolis. Designed by architect Philippe Prost, this elliptical monument brings together 580,000 names of soldiers who fell on the soil of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais during the First World War: 40 nationalities are represented. Engraved in alphabetical order, without distinction of nationality, the names of the friends and enemies of yesterday are thus united 100 years after the beginning of the conflict. Created on the initiative of the Nord-Pas de Calais Regional Council, this international monument goes beyond, for the first time, the national memories of the tragedy. Among the names engraved on the memorial are Francis Faber, winner of the Tour de France in 1909, John Kipling, son of the poet Rudyard Kipling, and Joseph Standing Buffalo, grandson of Indian chief Sitting Bull and Hans Dülfer , German mountaineer.
